How to prepare for the ATSA
Prepare for the skill, not for a leaked form. The ATSA items are confidential. A useful four weeks is short timed drills, one error type at a time, and the FAA's own description of the test so you do not invent a format. The plan below is the same one we email.
What not to do
Do not buy a PDF that claims to be this year's questions. Do not treat a percentile on a practice site as your FAA band. Do not cram the night before a 3.5 hour test. The FAA's hiring page is the description that counts: a computer-based cognitive test, in person, after an invitation. Well Qualified is the band their hiring material treats as the one that moves you on. They do not publish the cut as a percentage you can game.
The four-week plan
Week 1. Learn the four tasks
- Day 1. Run the free spatial drill once. Afterwards, say out loud which aircraft was highest and which was nearest the centre. Stop there.
- Day 2. Run the free reaction drill. Note your median time. Do not chase a number. You are learning the keys.
- Day 3. Run the free multitask drill. When you miss, write down which panel you ignored. That is the point of the day.
- Day 4. Run the free listening drill with headphones if you have them. Type the readback in the same order every time: callsign, heading, flight level.
- Day 5. Repeat the drill you scored lowest on. One run only. Then read the FAA or employer page that describes the real test, so you do not invent a format.
- Day 6. Rest from the screen. Sleep is part of a timed test. If you want something on paper, sketch four aircraft and mark the highest.
- Day 7. One calm pass through all four free drills. No repeats. Record the four scores.
Week 2. Add a little speed
- Day 8. Spatial picture again. Before you answer, name the north-most aircraft. Then answer the question that is actually asked.
- Day 9. Reaction drill. If you have paid access, use the changing-rule variant. If not, repeat the free drill and try to make fewer late presses, not faster wild presses.
- Day 10. Multitask. Say the sum out loud before you type it. The gauge still counts.
- Day 11. Listening. Play the message once only. If you miss a number, that miss stands. Replaying hides the skill.
- Day 12. Mix two drills back to back: spatial, then listening. A real session also changes task without a long break.
- Day 13. Rest, or a 10-minute walk. Do not add a new drill today.
- Day 14. Repeat day 7. Compare the four scores with week 1. Keep the sheet.
Week 3. Hold two things at once
- Day 15. Paid spatial conflict drill if you have it, otherwise the free picture with a clock you set to 60 seconds.
- Day 16. Reaction go/no-go if you have it. Count false presses. A withheld press is a correct answer.
- Day 17. Multitask rising load if you have it. Your job is to finish the item that is about to expire, not the one you like.
- Day 18. Listening with similar callsigns if you have it. Write the callsign before the numbers so you do not swap them.
- Day 19. Full mix: one drill from each family, in the order spatial, reaction, multitask, listening.
- Day 20. Look at your misses. Pick one error type only (wrong altitude, late key, dropped gauge, swapped flight level) and run that family once.
- Day 21. Off. If the test is soon, this rest day matters more than another run.
Week 4. Rehearse the morning, not a miracle
- Day 22. Sit the four free drills at the time of day your real test is booked. Same chair, same headphones.
- Day 23. One paid variant you find unpleasant. Stop while you can still read the explanation.
- Day 24. Listening only. Three messages, one play each. Then stop.
- Day 25. Spatial only. Explain each answer in one sentence before you click.
- Day 26. Short mix, half the usual length. You are keeping the feel, not building fitness in one day.
- Day 27. Pack what the test centre asked for. Read the appointment email. No new drill.
- Day 28. Optional: one free spatial drill, then leave it. Eat, sleep, arrive early. A score on this site is not a prediction.
The free drills are on the ATSA practice page and on each family page. If you want this plan in your inbox, use the email box beside the buy button. Unsubscribing is one click.
