ATC Drills

Is the ATC test hard?

Yes, for most people who apply. The FAA says fewer than 10% of applicants are accepted into training. That number is the whole pipeline, not an ATSA pass rate. The test is hard because simple tasks get fast and stacked, and because a medical, a background check, and academy training sit behind it. Nobody honest can quote one pass rate for every country.

Separate the gates

People mix four different filters into one "pass rate". First, are you eligible to apply? For the FAA's standard trainee path that means US citizenship, under 31 at application, English, and a year of work or a degree, or a mix. Second, did the FAA invite you to the ATSA, and did you reach the band that window requires? Third, did you clear the medical and the security check? Fourth, did you finish the academy and then certify in a facility? Failing any one of those ends that attempt. A practice score touches only the second gate, and only as preparation, not as the gate itself.

What "hard" feels like on the day

Candidates describe a long sitting, about 3.5 hours in the FAA's own wording, in a test centre. The items are not obscure facts about air law. The strain is attention: a rule changes, a second task arrives, a number in a headset is close to the number you just typed. People who do well at puzzles on paper still drop items when the pace rises. That is why the drills here are timed.

Academy and the years after

Passing selection is the start of training, not the end of difficulty. Initial FAA training is several months at the Academy in Oklahoma City, paid, and then about one to three years on the job before you are certified at a facility. The FAA's workforce plan is where training losses are reported, and the figure changes. This page will not freeze a washout percentage from a blog.

Europe is a different hard

FEAST has its own stages, and each provider sets the cut. A German Fluglotse process adds language and a medical on top of the aptitude day. Do not import an American percentage into that process. If you want the skill work anyway, the same four drills apply. The FEAST page says what each stage is.

Practice past the free drill

One free drill in each family stays free. Paid drills are the harder variants.

Questions people ask

Is it hard to pass the air traffic controller test?

Yes, for most people who apply. The hard part is speed and load, then a medical, a background check, and academy training. The FAA says fewer than 10% of applicants are accepted into training. That is not the same number as an ATSA pass rate, which the FAA does not publish.

Is it really hard to become an air traffic controller?

The selection is the small gate. After that comes paid academy training and one to three years of on-the-job training before you are a certified controller. The work is shift work. The FAA's own hiring page says so.

How many people fail ATC training?

The FAA's controller workforce plan is the document that tracks training losses, and the figure moves by year. This page does not freeze a number from a secondary article. Training is a second filter after the aptitude test. Look up the current plan on faa.gov.

Is an air traffic controller harder than a pilot?

They are different jobs with different tests, medicals, and training. A comparison of 'harder' does not help you prepare. If you want the controller path, prepare for the controller test you were invited to.

What is the pass rate for the air traffic controller test?

There is no single public pass rate that covers the FAA, EUROCONTROL, and every national provider. For the FAA, do not confuse 'accepted into training' (the FAA says under 10% of applicants) with an ATSA percentage. For FEAST, the employer decides the cut score.

How hard is it to get hired as an air traffic controller?

You have to be eligible, be invited to test, score high enough, clear medical and security checks, finish the academy, and then certify in a facility. Any one of those can stop the process. Hiring waves open and close. The vacancy on USAJOBS is the live source.
